Painting a Clan Goliath Scorpion Scheme by Mastergunz

1. What you'll need:
  • First off you'll need a good Primer.  While there are many products out there that work well I use ColorPlace Equipment Grey Spray-On for a few reasons. 1. It goes on very smooth 2. The shade of grey works equally well for light or dark schemes 3. At $1.50 a can it's cheap!
  • Testor's Dull-Coat. This will dull the sheen of your paint as well as protect all your hard work.
  • Elmers Clear Project Glue. This is too add the basing material and flock/static grass to your mini.
  • Brushes. I use a #4 Filbert for applying washes and base coats, a #0 small tip for details and highlights and a Large Round for dry-brushing.
  • Paints. While there is a huge variety of colors out there these paints listed are the ones I have had the best luck with. However, feel free to use similar colors from your preferred paint ranges.

GW -Boltgun Metal and Tin Bitz

Washes
GW Badab Black and Devlin Mud

Gloss Coat
GW 'ardcoat
  • 2 Containers of Clean Water. 1 for flat paints and 1 for Metallics.

2. Once your mini has been cleaned of all mold lines, assembled and washed (use warm soapy water and an old tooth brush then let air dry) apply 2-3 thin coats of primer. Let dry for at least 12 hours. This gives the primer time to fully dry and bond to the mini.

3. Apply a wash of Badab Black to the entire mini and let dry. The natural tranperancy of thinned paint allows this layer to show through the base color giving natural looking panel lines. Note: Use a moist brush or paper towel to dab any "pools" of wash that may form on flat surfaces before they dry.

4. Using your medium brush (#4 Filbert) apply a thinned 1 part paint to 1 part water (1:1) coat of Snot Green to the whole mini. Once dry apply a second coat for smooth and even coverage. Clean your brush.

5. Now we dry-brush!
Place a bit of thinned (1:1) Goblin Green on your Large Round brush and then wipe of the excess on a piece of paper. Remember, you want almost no paint left on the brush at this point.
Using large, fast sweeping motions hit the mini from all possible angles to get the best coverage.
Finally, with your #0 fine tip paint any desired "trim" with Chaos Black.

6. More advanced painters; Using your #0 apply highlights of Goblin Green to any green areas and a 50/50 mix of Choas Black and Codex Grey to any Black areas.

7. Now we add the metallic details. Paint the joints, weapon ports and heat sink "vents" either Boltgun Metal or Tin Bitz. Target wash with Badab Black.

8. Your almost done! Using a 1:1 mixture of Graveyard Earth and water paint the base of the mini and let dry. Now apply a heavy wash of Devlin Mud. Once that dries dry-brush the base with pure Graveyard Earth. To add some distinction to your base work you can apply a light dry-brushing of a 50/50 mix of Graveyard Earth and Skull White in random places. Now paint the edges of your base Chaos Black.

Allow the mini to rest for at least an hour to ensure all the paints have time to set up fully. At this point you can add static grass or flocking using the Elmers Clear Project Glue.

For Decals. If you would like to add decals now is the time. Apply a thin layer of GW 'ardcoat (or any other paint-on varnish) to any areas where you will be applying decals and let dry. After you have placed your decals to the desired areas and they have dried thoroughly apply another layer of gloss varnish. This will prevent your decals from 'silvering' and give them a painted on look.

Sealing. Spray your finished piece with 2-3 thin layers of Testor's Dull-Coat and let dry overnight.

You now have a quality piece that will look as good on the table as in the dispaly case.

Please Note: This exact process will also work for  Clan Jade Falcon Epsilon Galaxy. :)
